quick lit – next page, please {april 2020}

This pandemic has taught me a lot of things. Specifically regarding my reading life, I have learned that I am very much a mood reader.  I have continued the trend from last month of starting and stopping so many books I have been excited about and then feeling blah about them as time progressed.  Coincidentally, some books I have picked up on a whim, have been very pleasant reads. I did slightly better than last month and completed three books.

Read

  • Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo. This is a self-help, get your rear-in-gear kind of book about accomplishing your goals and dreams. Marie believes that “everything is able to be figured out” – hence the name – and she doesn’t tolerate excuses. I was surprised that I enjoyed this book with everything that was going on.  Perhaps it served as a not-so-gentle reminder that it could be worse and we all still have work to do. I was exhausted afterward however, and retreated into something a bit fun and easy.
  • Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfrey. This was the fun and easy and I read it in three of my reading-before-bed periods.  Fun. Easy.  Just what I wanted and needed in April.
  • Beach Read by Emily Henry. I gifted myself a subscription to Book of the Month last year and this was my April pick. I was thrilled to receive this one early. It’s the story of two authors: one writes romance and one writes literary fiction.  The romance writer no longer believes in love and the literary fiction writer is stuck in a rut. One thing leads to another and they strike a deal to each write a book in the other’s genre.  It’s a book about writers, books, love, and living and it was deeper than I ever expected it to be.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I was also thrilled to discover that it was one of the picks in the Modern Mrs. Darcy Summer Reading Guide. One book completed!

Just in Case You Were Wondering

Book of the Month is a subscription service where they pick up five of the new best reads, with emphasis on debut authors, early releases, and fresh perspectives, and you get to select one for $14.99. It’s considerable less than what you would pay for the hardcover, and sometimes the paperback. And I love getting early access to books I want to read.  Beach Read released on May 19th but I was delighted to have finished  on April 29th.  If you’re interested in Book of the Month, check it out here.  You could help me earn a free book. LOL

The Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Summer Reading Guide is the quintessential guide to a fun summer reading experienced.  Released yesterday, it is the highlight of my reading year.  I can’t wait to dive into my selections.  You can get your own copy here. She also does a Quick Lit post every month discussing what she is currently reading, which I am linking this post to.  Need more ideas, check her out and if you’re here because of her,  I can’t thank her, and you, enough.

How’s your reading life going?

quick lit- next page, please {march 2020}

First, a public service announcement: If you’re looking for some “bookish delight” while staying home, check out the Stay at Home Book Tour over on Modern Mrs. Darcy.  There are two weeks worth of conversations with authors who have books releasing into the world during this time (which is very challenging for authors who can’t do book tours and signings right now).  Some of these books I have read and highly recommend. And others I had not and so, I must confess, my purse is a little lighter. Go ahead, click on over there and see what I mean and then come back here and check out my March reading recap.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled post:

quick lit. March 2020

So, you would think that with Covid-19, I would have read a lot of books.  If you read my “What I’m Into {March 2020}” post, you know that I didn’t really deal to well with everything the first couple of weeks. But I did manage to read a couple of books and I am still four books ahead of schedule for my Goodreads 2020 Reading Challenge. My goal is to read 40 books this year.

I have been dabbling in and out of books this whole month trying to find one that I could enjoy during these strange times. I think I might have started at least seven so I will just share the ones that I have stuck with and am close to completion.

  • Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo. This is a self-help, get your rear-in-gear kind of book about accomplishing your goals and dreams. Marie believes that “everything is able to be figured out” – hence the name – and she doesn’t tolerate excuses. I was surprised to find myself reading and enjoying this with everything that is going on but I did.  Perhaps it served as a not-so-gentle reminder that it could be worse and we all still have work to do.
  • Midnight at the Blackbird Café by Heather Webber. This is the new pick for Rocket City Mom Virtual Book Club for for Mat. It’s a  reread for me so, yes, I like it very much. It’s a delight and who couldn’t use a little delight right now?

I have abandoned so many books this past month searching for something that I sink my teeth into right now that I really do not want to go into it.

What about you? How has all of this affected your reading life?

enjoy life…

P.S. Per usual, I am linking up with Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit post.  If you are here, because of her, I’m grateful. Thank you for being here.

quick lit – next page, please {february 2020}

If you were here for my What’ I’m Into – Keeping Me Sane for February, you will know that I have been exhausted, dealing with a ton of anxiety and was stressed out.  That made for a very unusual reading month for me. I only completed two and a half books!

Read

  • Save the Cat! Write a Novel by Jessica Brody. I think most of us at some point want to write a novel and I am no exception. But I had no idea where to start.  Save the Cat gave me a place to start.
  • Playing Big: Find Your Voice, Your mission, Your Message by Tara Mohr. I first found out about this book in 2012 but it was a case of right book, wrong time. This month, it was right book, right time. I had an epiphany while leaving a meeting this month.  I have been “playing small” in my life. I have been doing less than what I am capable of and even less of what I want to do in the road. Tara (you know I love the book when I call the author by their first name) is going to help me with this.   I’m so happy I read it. I am already implementing a number of strategies and have referenced the book many times since my initial reading.
  • The Girl in the Plane by Katherine Center. True, this is a short story but Goodreads counts it as a book so I am going to also. It is the connecting story between Katherine’s two books: How to Walk Away and Things You Save in the Fire, both of which I have read and enjoyed.

Currently Reading

  • The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow. I wanted to enjoy this one slowly, especially after hearing Alix Harrow discuss it at the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club meeting in February 2020. I am really looking forward to finishing this up when I am finish reading the books I need to read.
  • The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory. I have loved reading lighter fare during this season and will finish this one soon, if I haven’t already done so, by this post.

I didn’t abandoned any books this month.

What about you? How has this season affected your reading life?  What have you enjoyed recently?

And per usual, I am linking up with Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit post.  If you are here, because of her, I’m grateful. Thank you for being here.
