what i’m into – keeping me sane {august 2018}

We say that we want more time.  What we really want is more memories.

 – Lila Davachi

I was concerned about running myself ragged this month due to our trip to Miami – don’t you always need a vacay after your vacation?  But I am very proud to say that based upon a revelation from Laura Vanderkam’s new book, Off the Clock, I focused on having new experiences which created lasting memories:

  • We ate at some new spots even though I typically like to eat at national food chains for consistency. But in the spirit of trying new things, we tried out several local spots. One day was a disappointment but the best was The Daily Creative Food Co. in South Beach. It was ranked number four of The 15 Best Places for Breakfast Food in Miami and I would really like to know how on earth the top three could be any better. There were omelets the size of your head and the home fries, AKA breakfast potatoes, were beyond delicious. Everything was seasoned to perfection. No salt needed. There was also fresh squeezed oj. It was easily one of the best breakfasts I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Yum! And they serve breakfast all day. It doesn’t get any better than that.

We also ate at a soul food place: Lil Greenhouse Grill in Overtown near downtown Miami. Delicious, albeit service was a bit slow due to the restaurant being full, but the food was worth the wait.

If you’re in the Miami area check out these spots. I don’t think that you’ll regret it.

  • I visited Books & Books, an indie bookstore with a few locations in the Miami area. I had the pleasure of visiting two of them. I love bookstores.
  • When we returned home, I watched The Guersney Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a Netflix Original. Set right after WWII, the movies involves a writer. There’s a book club. And there is a bit of romance.  What’s not to love? And it was delightful. You should check it out (It was originally a book, of course. May have to read it to find out the whole story one day).
  • The fall issue of Joanna and Chip’s Magnolia Journal contained an article about Joanna’s foray into the world of watercolor. I have always wanted to learn how to watercolor but, like Joanna, I was afraid of the medium.  Everyone said that watercolor is the most difficult of the painting arts.  But inspired and motived by Joanna and wanting to make memories with the Buddy Man, I purchased two sets of Crayola watercolor – one for him and one for me.  We have been painting consistently since.  And yes, it is challenging. The color moves with the water and can be hard to control without proper techniques.  But watercolor is also versatile; where else can you paint with salt and cotton balls?  And thanks to all the artists on YouTube, I’ve learned that there is no right or wrong way to watercolor.    Go with the flow, something that I need to learn to do daily anyway.
  • I have participated in the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run for cancer awareness and prevention, occurring annually in October for a number of years and those races are definitely in the highlight reel of my life. I’ve signed up for this year’s race, scheduled for October 20th, and if you are in the Huntsville area I would love to see you out there – either running or cheering us on. Let me know if there’s a chance to meetup.
  • And, not to end on a sour note, we had a negative experience this month: Our dog, Bimmer, some of his reflections were featured on this blog, got loose from the home where he was staying while we were on vacay in Miami. He did not come back when called.

What about you? What have been some of your best memories this month?

Linking up with Leigh Kramer, per usual.  It’s fun reading what everyone is up to. Does that make me nosey?

what I’m into – that’s keeping me sane {july 2018}

This month has gone by in a world wind and has been a tad overwhelming. Here’s what I’ve been up to and how I have stayed sane through it all.

  • For the first time my family and I went out to see the local fireworks show during the Fourth of July. I don’t know why I haven’t done this before; OK, that’s not entirely accurate. It’s because I dislike the crowds. However, we were fortunate to get a viewing spot where we had an excellent view of the show while remaining in our cars.  Win-Win.  I love fireworks and have determined to make it a yearly tradition with the Buddy Man from now on, crowds or not.
  • We are blessed to have celebrated my grandma’s 80th birthday early this month. This included a surprise birthday celebration in her home town which, according to my mom, caused us all to “lose about 10 years of our lives” trying to keep it a secret from her.  She is very inquisitive so you can imagine.  We pulled it off and it was amazing.
  • This was followed by a trip to my parents, accompanied by my grandma, with the intention of her having some one-on-one time with her great-grandson. She and the Buddy Man have a great relationship and it was so nice seeing the two of them together over the course of several days.
  • My sister and her family flew in for the birthday celebration and it is always good to spend time with them.
  • I attended a Silent Writing Retreat at Lake Guntersville hosted by Toya Poplar.  Met some good people and wrote some stuff.
  • I have conducted a couple of interviews with some very interesting people that I will be featuring on the blog in the upcoming months. I’m excited!

All this traveling and spending time with and around others (while wonderful) can drain an introvert like me who recharges with alone time and being in the comfort of her own space.  So, I stayed sane…

  • with a lot of reading. See this month’s Quick Lit post. Several page-turners kept me up at night which was probably counter-productive but a small price to pay.  I had to find out what happened next.  It’s nice to retreat into another world for a while.
  • by continuing to make my home an inviting space. I started the journey of rooting some of my plants and placed them around my house in glass vases. Greenery will improve any space. Thanks to Joanna Gaines for that tip. I also used Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to get some scuff marks and dirt off the doors of my home.  I gotta tell you, they look like new.
  • One thing that I have always wanted to do is to volunteer at a nonprofit organization that is doing wonderful work and I want to devote a certain number of hours per year to this endeavor. I got started this month with a couple of hours to the CornerStone Initiative in Huntsville, AL.

With another trip on the horizon, albeit to the beautiful Miami, I am having to be intentional about my activities and self-care routines.

Per usual I’m linking up with Leigh Kramer. What about you? What are you into that’s keeping you sane?

what i’m into – that’s keeping me sane {june 2018}

Knowing that I post what I’m into each month keeps me focused on things that keep me sane. Thank you. Here are the highlights for June.

I have continued to read instead of mindlessly watching television.  I read seven books this month (more about them and others on this month’s Quick Lit post coming soon).

Even with all that reading, I did finish out my DVR’d episodes of This is Us. Wow! All of the feels on this!

Speaking of feels, I am finally getting around to a personal commandment that I made a year or two ago: Feel It!  I discussed this in a past post but I have been feeling a lot of feels this month. There were a couple of books that were very emotionally driven – I’m looking at you: The Ensemble; The Immortalist; and That Kind of Mother – but I sat in it and through it.

I enjoyed some excellent moments with the Buddy Man: cuddling while reading, going on playdates with Dom and Deucee, eating popsicles, and bursting water balloons.

Finally, I intentionally recharged after late nights before moving forward in my day.  One time, that involved reading in the cool of the shade by a beautiful lake before my next appointment. It was perfectly lovely.

And isn’t it those lovely, albeit simple, intentional moments that keep us all sane.

Per usual, I’m linking up with Leigh Kramer’s What I’m Into.  Whatcha’ been doin’ this month?

enjoy life…
